‘Ubwuzuzanye’ – which means ‘Harmony’
‘Indatezuka’ – meaning ‘Resilient’ or
‘Turikumwe’ – meaning ‘We are Together’?

The above are just a few of the twenty newborn baby gorillas named in a global celebration of nature at the Kwita Izina – Gorilla Naming Ceremony.

HRH The Prince of Wales, sports stars, conservationists and business people were some of those involved in the 18th Kwita Izina 2022 celebration of gorillas.

The annual event celebrates the communities that live around Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, its research partners, vets and the dedicated conservationists, rangers and trackers who protect the gorillas.

How to… Go Gorilla Trekking

Some tips from one of our Africa specialist tour operator partners, African Pride!
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes. Take gaiters and gardening gloves to protect you from the ants.
  • You will be allocated a group suitable for your walking ability, but be prepared, it could be a long, yet rewarding day!
  • Make use of the porters to help to carry your water and bag. Porters are also available to carry disabled and wheelchair visitors at a charge.
  • Listen to your guide, they have spent 2 years living alongside the gorillas.
  • Time is limited so make the most of every second! You will only have one hour with these fabulous creatures.
  • Don’t forget your camera, video and energy for the trek!
Why visit Rwanda?

  • Kigali is a vibrant, friendly capital city with a thriving cultural and food scene.
  • Easily accessible from Kigali, you can see the ‘Big 5’ in The Akagera National Park, in addition to diverse birdllife.
