Let me tempt you with a luxury fly-drive itinerary that showcases just some of the very best that California has to offer (not withstanding the sunshine, of course!)

Read on to discover more about, what could be, your California adventure!

Your journey will begin in the vibrant city of San Francisco, where you will enjoy a three night stay at a luxury hotel. Located at the top of Nob Hill, the Fairmont San Francisco will afford you one of the most spectacular views over the city.

Exploring the city’s neighbourhoods via the famous cable cars is a must, but of course you haven’t truly seen San Francisco until you also visit the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, discover the eerie corridors of Alcatraz prison or lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf where you find yourself competing with the local wildlife for the mouth-watering catch of the day.

Heading north over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, you will arrive in to California’s wine country, Napa Valley, where some of the best wines in the USA are produced.  and the rolling hills and vineyards make quite a beguiling backdrop.

Your accommodation will be at the lavish Meritage Resort and Spa, which is set on a private nine-acre vineyard with walking trails.  The property lists a spa, a variety of restaurants and bars, an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, and nine wine tasting rooms amongst its facilities.  Be sure to make time to tour the vineyards, journey on the wine train and indulge in sumptuous wine-tastings whilst in the stunning Napa region.

Rivalling Napa for its wine producing, Sonoma features over 500 wineries and acclaimed farm-to-table restaurants as well as numerous art galleries and historic adobe buildings. You will enjoy a one night stay at The Farmhouse Inn, an exquisite boutique resort set amongst towering redwoods and vast vineyards.

Turn your compass south and join the Pacific Coast Highway with a stay in Monterey, a real haven for wildlife.

Humpback whales can be spotted offshore but for a closer and greater heart-warming experience, then a local boat tour is a must – keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and sea otters too!

Once canning factories, the colourful quaint shops & restaurants that you will find dotted along Monterey’s wharf are perfect for browsing followed by a relaxing lunch or dinner with menus that feature the region’s fresh seafood.

You can look forward to a wonderful nights rest after the excitement of your day with a stay at the Portola Hotel & Spa, Monterey Bay.

Big Sur

Set off along the California’s stunning coastal route along Highway 1 and on to Big Sur. Wetlands, cypress forests, rugged coastline and the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean provide the stunning backdrop for this epic drive.

Be sure to make time to make regular stops along the way to take in the views, especially at the iconic Bixby Bridge.

After your day of driving and lots of fresh coastal air, you will have a two night stay to look forward to at the luxury Post Ranch Inn, which is nestled on the cliffs of Big Sur and offers magnificent sea views.

Santa Barbara

Your journey continues south passing the stunning McWay Falls, Sand Dollar Beach and Black Swift Waterfalls before reaching San Simeon, home to the historic monument and museum of Hearst Castle.  More wildlife can be viewed en route at Elephant Seal Vista Point.

Spanish-style architecture, ocean panoramas and views of the Santa Ynez Mountains awaits you in Santa Barbara.

A haven of stylish seafood restaurants, fashionable boutiques, art galleries and micro-breweries you won’t want to leave Santa Barbara, especially after your stay at the Hotel Californian – a waterfront property that combines a perfect mix of Spanish Colonial architecture and redefined luxury.

Santa Monica

Your self-drive adventure concludes in the laid-back beach city of Santa Monica and a stay at the luxurious Shutters on the Beach.

Located in western suburb of L.A, Santa Monica is home to a beachfront amusement park, iconic pier and casual eateries.

After your driving adventure of the past few days, I would recommend a full day to stretch your legs.  Hire a Segway, bicycle, roller skates or simply walk along part or all of the 22 mile Strand Beach Path that encompasses Venice Beach and Marina Del Rey – the  people watching is something not to be missed (along with the scenery of course!!).

During your stay in the city of stars, you may also wish to take a tour of Warner Bros. Studio, cruise Sunset Blvd, shop for luxury goods along Rodeo Drive or head in to the Hollywood Hills to see Los Angeles from a different perspective.  If sun and relaxation is all you need then simply relax by the pool or on Santa Monica’s soft sandy beach.

This itinerary presents just some of the many scenic and culinary highlights of California but of course, I can tailor any holiday to suit your interests and ideals.
