For more than 80 years, The Ghan has been traversing one of the world’s most remarkable routes – the Red Centre of Australia.

This elegantly luxurious train journey is the ultimate way to travel through this spectacular wilderness and the ever changing landscapes can be viewed through its panoramic windows.

The Ghan was named after the Afghan cameleers who helped open up interior Australia.   No longer needing to travel by camel, this relaxing train journey takes two nights/three days to travel the 2979km from Darwin in the tropical north to the fertile lands of Adelaide in the south.

There are three classes of onboard accommodation to choose from.

Platinum – Designed to meet the needs of the discerning traveller, this service offers the largest cabins on board and has an en suite.

Gold – The standard Gold cabins convert from a three seater lounge during the day to twin berths at night – one upper and one lower berth.  Twin cabins are fitted with an ensuite, however single cabins have  wash basins only, with toilet and shower facilities located at either end of the gold service carriage.  For additional cabin space and a ¾ double bed, upgrading to a Gold Service Superior cabin is suggested.

Red –  The lounge-style chairs offer a comfortable but economical way of taking this magnificent journey.  They swivel round to face each other for socialising and recline at night for sleeping.  Shower and toilet facilities are at the end of the red service carriage.

Mouth-watering dishes are served in the retro-Edwardian Queen Adelaide restaurant car for passengers travelling in Gold or Platinum, whilst Red service passengers are well catered for at the Matilda Cafe where meals, snacks and refreshments are available to purchase.

A stop at Alice Springs provides enough time to take a city tour.  The cruise excursion to witness the splendour of Katherine Gorge (another stop just south of Darwin) is also highly recommended. For a touring opportunity in the Red Centre, disembarkation at Alice Springs is also possible;  pick up the train at a later date to continue your journey should you wish.
